This person-level file contains data obtained in Rounds 2 and 3 (covering the full year, for periods that persons were resident in a nursing home), for a sample of 5,899 persons; one record per person. The data items have been constructed from the edited and imputed data on the Expenditure Bill-Level File (which correspond with questions from the Expenditure Questionnaire, (the EX questions)). The following statistics were derived from these data: Total expenses for services in nursing homes amounted to $69.9 billion. The mean annual expense per person was $22,561. The mean expense per day was $118. Medicaid paid 44% and Medicare paid 19% of the total expenses. 30% of total expenses were paid out-of-pocket, while private insurance paid 4% and other sources of payment paid the remaining 3%. Data are included on persons sampled as January 1, 1996 residents and those sampled as a 1996 admission to the sampled nursing home. Together these samples represent all persons who used a nursing home any time during 1996.
